RE: [council] upcoming teleconference thursday september 21
Ken/NC Members:
Let me just reiterate the *pressing* importance of making your scheduling
decisions for the LA meeting in November. For your convenience, I attach
the message I've sent to the Names Council twice since July, without any
response. We *must* have some answers prior to the 28th of September --
this means appointing a DNSO meeting coordination as soon as possible, and
deciding about webcasting no later than the 28th. Understandably, several
constituencies have begun to query John and me about their LA meetings.
Let's get this organized rapidly, in the interests of all attendees.
Sorry to sound so crabby, but John and I are doing our best to meet the
common request to get our meetings better & sooner organized, and we have
had zero cooperation from the Names Council so far.

Subject: [council] upcoming teleconference thursday september 21
after watching the opening ceremonies of the games in sydney, let me say
G'DAY FELLOW MEMBERS.....
as you are all aware, we have a scheduled teleconference set up for
september 21st .
i have had very little input from the names council members regarding
prosp[ective agenda items and considering the fact that we have just come
off summer holidays and their usual distractions. i will pose a question to
all of you..
would it not be more effective to re-schedule the 21st teleconference to the
28th at 08:30 usa eastern time (this time provides for somewhat practical
hours for all attendees) ?
this would give us an opportunity to review the reports of the budget
committee and , hopefully a rough draft of proposed DNSO review committee
methodology. it would also give us more time for reflection and the
opportunity to provide more constructive suggestions to the members of that
committee as well.
we also have the task of looking more closely at how to more effectively
involve the individual internet users in the policy formation process. their
have been suggestions that a working group be formed in this area but,
frankly, to this point , i have heard very little from the other council
members, (beside YJ), on exactly how to deal with this process more
effectively.
it is primarily for these reasons that i am suggesting that we put off the
teleconference for 1 week and re-schedule the conference to september 28th.
i really need your input on this request and will assume that if i do not
hear any significant "human cry" against this suggestion that you are
comfortable with same.
here are some thoughts for agenda items for the proposed teleconference:
1. current financial status
2. plans for november icann meeting (rooms, webcast, finances etc)
3. budget committee report
4. intake committee report
5. discussion on DNSO review methodology
6. potential future individual constituancy involvment
i have had no other suggestions for agenda items from anyone.. any thoughts
here ?
please get back to me in the next day or two (i assume most of you review
your mail over the weekends)
thanks and looking for your input
best wishes
ken
NC folks:
We are now making preparations for the LA meetings in November. We have not
heard anything from the NC relating to the webcast, or to meeting
scheduling. I am attaching my email of July 27 as a reminder.
It is our collective obligation to get the DNSO meetings organized and
publicized farther in advance, so I would appreciate it if the NC could
designate a coordinator and make a decision about webcasting.
Best regards,
--Andrew
Names Council folk:
Just when you thought it was time to relax, we've got to start making
arrangements for the November meetings in Los Angeles, California. The
venue for the meetings will be the Marriott Hotel in Marina del Rey,
California.
As we did in Yokohama (many thanks to Hotta-san!), the Names Council needs
to designate a single contact person who will be responsible for making DNSO
scheduling decisions, and conveying them to ICANN staff.
ICANN's contact person for scheduling will be John Crain <crain@icann.org>.
As in the past, I ask that DNSO constituencies *not* flood him directly with
room requests, but rather work through the Names Council's designated
organizer.
ICANN will attempt to secure the necessary DNSO meeting rooms at no cost to
the DNSO, but I cannot yet confirm that all the rooms will be available for
free. Webcasting of the NC and GA will again require a sponsor, or a
commitment of funds from the DNSO, in the amount of approximately $10,000.
Here's what we're currently assuming on the basis of prior meetings:
Day 1 (November 13): Constituencies
- ccTLD (100 persons)
- gTLD (30)
- Registrars (100)
- ISPs (30)
- Business (50)
- Noncommercial (100)
- Intellectual Property (50)
Day 2 (November 14): Names Council & GA
Day 3 (November 15): ICANN Public Forum
Day 4 (November 16): ICANN Board
However, the DNSO and the constituencies can schedule themselves as they
like. Meeting rooms earlier than November 13 or later than November 16
cannot be provided for free under any circumstances, so please factor that
into your decisions.
Once you have designated a contact person, she/he should contact John
directly.
Thanks!
