Could you please detail what these superior trade offs are because I
am genuinely mystified.  There seem to be huge benefits to Verisign
and little in return.

Will ICANN make more money from this?  Will domain name fees be
cheaper?  Will there be more or less potential conflicts of interest?
Will existing domain name holders find it harder or easier to renew
their domains?  WIll it be harder or easier to change registry if it
not doing as good a job as desired?
