What you read, what religion you practise, what you eat, and many, many 
other things affect "what you think on many topics".  This is what is 
called a slippery slope.

The problem is that it is entirely inappropriate to question a person's 
internal considerations in these sorts of discussions.

Either their statements have merit or they do not.  Either the statements 
are compelling on their own or they are not.
