Firefighter Reels In All-American Berth
Written by: Jim Morris

Barry Baldwin loves Kentucky Lake. And, apparently, Kentucky
Lake loves him.

"I have fished there quite a bit and feel I know it fairly
well," Baldwin said.

So when he saw qualifiers from the Michigan Division of the
Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League would be taking part in the
regional tournament at Kentucky Lake this year, that’s
where he set his sights.

Not only did Baldwin recently qualify for the regional, he
won it, taking the co-angler championship, good for a
$25,000 Ranger boat and motor package and a trip to the
2003 All-American.

Baldwin usually fishes in the Buckeye Division of the BFL
(formerly Red Man), with most of the tournaments held in
Ohio, but when he saw the Michigan qualifiers would be
going to Kentucky Lake, he couldn’t pass up the
opportunity.

So Baldwin fished five tournaments in Michigan, going
with his friend, Miles Johnson of Beavercreek, Ohio.
Johnson entered as a boater and Baldwin as a co-angler
(a nonboater who is paired with a different boater each
day of a tournament and fishes from the back of the
boat). It was a good deal for Johnson, too, as he won
one of the events in July on the Detroit River.

Baldwin, 40, often fishes with his twin brother, Brad.
They live next door to each other and are members of the
Dayton Fire Department. Brad, an accomplished tournament
fisherman himself, finished second in a BFL regional last
year and fished in this year’s All- American, finishing
41st and winning $500.

Barry, a captain and 13-year member of the fire department,
said he has fished Kentucky Lake many times, since some
former Dayton firefighters have a house there and he has
a trailer on nearby Lake Barkley. Knowing the lake, he
felt, helped him win.

Still, as with any event, weather and other factors always
play a part.

On the first day, he weighed just one fish for 2 pounds, 1
ounce. The next day, he landed two fish (one was a five-
pounder) and wound up qualifying for the final round. On
the final day, he weighed four fish for nine pounds, one
ounce, more than four pounds better than the runner-up.

"The first day of the tournament, I caught 30 to 40 fish,
but only one was a keeper (15 inches or longer)," he
recalled.

The final day, fishing the Tennessee portion of Kentucky
Lake, was rainy and cold and, as he said, "just perfect
for a topwater bite. And I caught them all on topwater
baits."

                  FISHING JOKES CORNER
------------------------------------------------------------

For many years, a warden had been trying to catch an old
fish poacher but had been unsuccessful. Finally, after he
had retired, he asked the old man if he would take him out
fishing. The next day the ex-warden shows up at the dock
fishing gear in hand and was suprised when the old man
showed up carrying only a gunny sack. The old man motors
out to a good looking spot, anchors, then reaches in the
bag and pulls out a stick of dynamite. He lights it, throws
it in the water and after it goes off, scoops up the fish
with a net. The ex-warden is furious and starts yelling at
the old man. The old man calmly lights another stick, hands
it to the ex-warden and says "Did you come out here to fish
or talk?"

[Thanks Finalanser247 for the great joke]
