Dearest Diet Buddies, I’ve been writing this column now for 
a couple of years, and during this time you’ve taught me a 
great deal about the art of eating for a healthy life.  I’d 
like to take this opportunity to review what I’ve learned 
from you all my Diet Buddy readers about successful dieting.  
Here are the basics:

1.  Nobody can lose weight for you, even if they love and 
adore you.  It’s truly up to you.  In addition, you have to 
love yourself enough to make the effort.  Start small.  Do 
little things that make you feel good about yourself, and 
that will encourage you to take better care of your health, 
including eating sensibly and getting enough exercise.

2.  There are medications available to help you.  
Pharmaceutical companies are working overtime trying to come 
up with breakthrough drugs to assist people in losing weight.  
At the current time, medications like Meridia, can be helpful.  
If a severe weight problem is connected to clinical depression, 
the newer antidepressants can also offer relief.  If you 
haven’t had a physical exam for awhile, now is the time to 
get one.  Then talk with your family doctor about the 
possibility of medication in your weight-loss efforts.

3.  Excess weight, and especially clinical obesity, is often 
a symptom of an underlying emotional disorder.  If you get to 
the heart of the problem, you may discover that losing weight 
is much less a struggle.  I’m a believer in the value of 
therapy as a weight-loss tool, because during therapy you 
begin to learn about yourself, and perhaps, why you are using 
food in unhealthy ways.  I strongly recommend finding a 
well-trained clinical therapist, preferably a psychologist or
psychiatrist, to assist you in battling a stubborn weight 
problem, particularly if you’re feeling terribly stressed and 
unhappy.  It’s worth a try, trust me on this.  

4.  Plan a strategy.  To lose weight, you need to be 
centered, focused and ready.  You must decide it is what you 
really want, really, really want.  Because if you are not 
ready, you will find any excuse at all to goof up.  To not 
stick with it.  To blame your weight on your spouse, your 
kids, your boss, or mother-in-law.

5.  Develop Attitude.  From the hundreds of e-mails I’ve
received, I’ve decided that enthusiasm is the most valuable 
mindset of all when it comes to losing pounds.  These are 
dieters who exhibit a healthy, positive, life-affirming 
attitude that says:  "I Can Do This!"  Great dieters embrace
life and all its possibilities.  Rather than whining about 
what they can’t eat, they work creatively to prepare healthy, 
tasty and satisfying meals.  They rejoice when they see a drop
on the scale, and they look forward to each and every day.  
If they splurge, they are realistic about it and don’t beat 
themselves up continuously.  They simply get back on track.  
And these are the very folks who write about weight loss 
ranging from 25 to 100 pounds.  Attitude is Everything. 

6.  Turning a diet into a lifestyle.  Successful dieters 
understand that losing weight is just the beginning of a 
change in the way we live.  In fact, eating sensibly and 
exercising moderately means that we can look and feel great 
for the rest of our lives.  A diet suggests a limited time 
span, a period with a definite beginning and end, but a 
healthy eating style should continue after initial weight-loss 
is completed.  That’s the only way we can be certain we won’t 
have to go on a diet yet again!

7.  Developing a healthier relationship with food.  There 
are complex reasons we turn to food for comfort, love and 
support, among other things.  But emotional-based eating is 
a problem that simply compounds all our other difficulties.  
Eating because of sadness or loneliness, for example, doesn’t
begin to touch the fundamental issues we’re facing.  If we’re 
lonely or sad, we need to reach out to others to feel 
connected; a junk-food indulgence won’t change that fact.  
The most successful dieters understand that eating is useful 
when we’re truly hungry not when our boss gives us a task we 
hate!
