[ga-icann] Registrar contracts

They said that their contracts with the Registrars don't enforce ANY consumer protection but only address how they work in relation to other registrars. Another thing that needs to be addressed IMHO is that they change that and address issues of consumer protection. The constant ignoring of consumers when negotiating these contracts is irritating.

That the concern that Registrars treat their registrants fairly was not included in any contract negotiations proves the fact ICANN does not consider the consumers/users of any importance to the process.

People can claim it's not the job of ICANN to do so and it belongs in the courts. The courts do not protect consumers in every country therefore the job does fall to ICANN.

Too often the responses to questions involving users rights lay the responsibility at the feet of the courts and direct it away from ICANN. That is another US Centric attitude. We have some consumer protection in the US Courts, although it is not very adequate. Many countries do not recognize the rights of consumers in the same way. So all these consumer issues need to be addressed within ICANN IF THEY ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TP PRETEND THEY ARE A POLICY ORGANIZATION.

They are not equipped to make policy and this lack of concern for the users proves that point. They need to go backl to technical coordination only and let the GA and @Large recommend policy.

When convenient they make policy. When not they claim they only are responsible for the technical aspects. Use the example given of the Registrars contract not addressing consumer rights at all. Make up your mind ICANN. You either are or are not a policy maker.
