Agreed a lot are in it for principle and to contribute to the community,
however, the big players are in for the money and there is no control over
other roots.

I can set one up using single letter TLD's, another person can set some up
using numbers. Given the arguments in support of other roots, no one would
be able to say nay. Given the arguments used in attempts to force ICANN
into recognising other roots, these would also have to be recognised. At
the moment, new.net could start rolling out thousands of TLD's, and a
number of them could be potential duplicates. Someone else may roll out a
new .com. Although the majority of other roots are careful to not conflict
with the legacy root, there is nothing stopping a new player coming in who
doesn't give a damn about the current situation and if they have enough
backing and clout, they would be able to use the same arguments as the
other roots in attempts to get their operations recognised.

That is one of the fundamental problems with other roots. There is no
control over them at all. Some would say this is a good thing. I have my
doubts.

Darryl (Dassa) Lynch.
