Danny's experience had nothing to do with a domain registrar, but with
an ISP who had gone out of business, and another company purchased
their assets, but didn't want their customer base (which was probably
valued at a loss).
I agree that the uk domain system seems to be quite a mess. You can't
even change registrars unless your existing registrar does the
transfer for you, very much unlike the existing process in
com/net/org.
By the way, for those who have been following this, the "Default Nak"
process that Register.com was using on outgoing transfers (Which
required registrants to affirmatively approve a transfer in a rather
confusing email or it would be denied) has been changed to a default
Ack process, much like the one Tucows uses now.
Tucows/OpenSRS sends a message to the registrant that lets them block
a transfer, or approve it early. If they approve it early, then the
ACK is sent immediately, and this speeds up the transfer process. If
they do nothing, the Ack is automatic after 5 days, and the transfer
goes through. If they Nak it, the transfer is blocked.
This leaves 2 registrars with Default Nak policies, both owned by
Verisign, Network Solutions and Registrars.com.
