In this whole, extended list management debate, this is the assertion that
I find most objectinable. It is myopic and shows no recognition of the
historic and evolutionary process in which we are all involved.
Even if the archives are polluted with too much self-serving noise, they
are reflective of where the collective consciousness of this list is
focusing at this moment in history. We already have the experience of
temporary loss and fragmentation of the newdom archives and should
recognize that archives are revisited for a host of reasons, not merely by
those attempting to separate noise from signal. Every subscriber list
should be archived by the list manager.
Just as there are those who feel that their petty beefs with other list
members merit airing on this list, there are also those who feel that the
end justifies the means, thus relegating the discussion along the contorted
path to resolution to the trash heap. With this point of view, I
strenuously disagree. I believe that the social evolution of the Internet
will have increasing import as it gains strength in its ubiquity within
human activities.
