RE: [ga] Naughty Domain Names
Ellen's recollection is quite correct, and the registration request she
cites (from Spring '98) is one that helped guide development of SRS policy
(from Summer '98 and on). The four-character string that caused rejection
by the old InterNIC registration system is a common string that appears in
many Japanese names without "offensive" meaning. NSI Registry policy from
day one of the SRS test bed has been that registrars who wish to accept
registrations for domain names containing such strings can do so based on
their own business policies and local regulations.

Well, this represents a change in historic policy.
I recall that the application for SHITAKEMUSHROOMS.COM in Spring 98 was
rejected because it included a four-character string considered offensive.
