[ga] Webcast of Discussion on Election Issues
Common Cause and the Center for Democracy and Technology, two
U.S.-based public interest groups, are co-hosting a small discussion
among election experts about the ICANN At-Large elections, in
Cambridge MA this Wednesday.
A flyer that has been circulating with details about the event is
attached below. As we know this is an issue of great interest to many
in the ICANN community, a webcast of the event is being made
available (and archived) and we invite all interested parties to
attend or listen in.

Global Elections:
On The Internet. For The Internet.
A Roundtable Discussion On
The ICANN At-Large Elections
Hosted by
Common Cause &
The Center for Democracy and Technology
Date: FEBRUARY 9, 2000
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (ET)
Place: Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government
Taubman Hall, Rooms A & B
Webcast: http://www.commoncause.org/icann
The Internet community is on the brink of holding a first-of-its-kind global
election. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
will soon elect leaders to help direct its critical responsibilities for the
technical management of the Internet. This ICANN At-Large election presents
the Internet community with tremendously important questions: Who will be
represented in ICANN decision-making? Will that decision-making reflect the
global diversity of the Internet? Will ICANN's decisions be made in the
interest of those in the Internet community who will be affected by them?
Common Cause and the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), with support
from the Markle Foundation, are performing an independent study of the ICANN
At-Large elections process. Common Cause and CDT are convening leaders from
the Internet community, as well as experts from many disciplines, to share
opinions, ideas and expertise on how the public interest can be served in
this election process.
On February 9, as a part of this effort, a roundtable discussion will bring
together leading thinkers in the fields of voting, elections and democratic
process to discuss the upcoming ICANN At-Large election. Participants will
include: Derek Bok, President Emeritus Harvard University; Joseph Nye,
Dean of the Kennedy School of Government; Charles Costello, Director
of the Carter Center's Democracy Program; and other distinguished
experts.
Given the importance of ICANN's elections to the Internet community, Common
Cause and CDT invite the interested public to attend this experts'
discussion. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be
cybercast at http://www.commoncause.org/icann.
Because seating will be limited, we ask those planning to attend in person
to RSVP at adraheim@commoncause.org
