John, I have to agree with Rick, that, with the exception of bandwidth
issues, there's no reason to limit access to the zone of a TLD. I suspect
that it might help someone writing a bot to crawl the sites, but that's
minimal. What other kind of mischief can be perpetrated with a zone
file? What good does it do a spammer? Let's them try guessable
email addresses at every domain name? I think finding the domains
via dig, or whois is just as simple.
Sorry, I don't see the downside here, especially if access is denied
except to those who ask for it. On a case-by-case basis, for example,
I have no problem giving Rick access to the .web zone. Indeed, if
he comes up with any problems or insights, I suspect he'd share
them with me and do me a service.
