[ga] Newsflash: Progress on .EU
Excerpts:
European Union ministers signed off on a plan Monday to establish ".eu" as an
Internet domain suffix, hoping a pan-European address will spur electronic
commerce in Europe.
Adoption by the EU telecoms ministers allows the EU's head office, the
European Commission, to select a private, nonprofit organization to manage
".eu" and establish procedures to handle disputes.
Any plan ultimately needs the approval of the Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers, the organization selected by the U.S. government
in 1998 to oversee domain names.
ICANN already has tentatively approved the creation of ".eu," but final
approval will come only after the group works out contractual details with
the yet-to-be-named ".eu" management organization.
