I am shocked, but not surprised, at the lack of NGO representation in the
ICANN leadership. While the Internet still has the potential to help
develop a civil society that promotes broad participation and diverse,
democratic principles, numerous pressures are working against that ideal.
For example, ICANN is under pressure to become even more of a bureaucracy
-- this trend will serve powerful corporate and government institutions at
the expense of NGOs and small businesses with fewer lawyers and bureaucrats
to represent them. Second, of course, the Internet itself is under numerous
pressures to become even more of a walled corporate garden. It is critical
that in every aspect of Internet governance, qualified candidates should be
chosen who will fight those trends, who will represent diverse and
under-represented net constituencies and who will challenge the
inevitability of the status quo. Jamie Love will do that and more. He has a
long record as an organizer, netizen and consumer advocate. I urge his
election
