[icann-endorsements] Endorsement for Nomination of Jonathan C. Cohen
3a. Full name of the endorser: Victoria Carrington
3b. E-mail address of the endorser: vcarrington@shapirocohen.com
3c. Full name of the accepted nominee you wish to endorse: Jonathan C. Cohen
As Jonathan Cohen's associate, I am fortunate to have had the opportunity
to collaborate closely with him on his Internet and ICANN-related work over
the past few years, and thus know firsthand the degree of effort and
dedication that he has put into his participation in the process, from the
earliest days of the international discussions about DNS reform, through
the formation of the DNSO, the IPC, and eventually his service on the ICANN
Board. I also know that his commitment to seeing the process through and
performing his duties as Director has come at a price, namely, the enormous
investment of personal and professional time (and the consequences it
entails), which is undoubtedly familiar to the many others who share the
desire to make the ICANN process and DNS management work to the benefit of
all stakeholders.
While Jonathan's expertise is in intellectual property law, and he
accordingly led the efforts to establish the IPC as a DNSO constituency
which reflected the broad range of concerns and interests present in the
international IP community, he has always recognized that these interests
must be addressed in the context of the often competing concerns of other
stakeholder groups. He has therefore been committed to understanding the
issues of importance to, and facilitating dialogue among, all the
constituencies, which he has continued to do while serving on the
Board. As a member of the Board of CIRA, Jonathan has played a part in
helping to shape the reform of Canada's top level domain, and he brings
this experience and perspective to the ICANN Board as well.
I know that as a member of the ICANN Board, he has worked hard to fulfill
this duty to represent not only all members of the DNSO, but to balance the
interests of the entire Internet community as a whole. He has also made
considerable effort to reach out to other potential stakeholders around the
world in areas which have not had the opportunity to participate as fully
to date, by actually travelling to countries such as Japan, Korea, South
Africa, Thailand, India, and, later this year, the Philippines and Israel,
to personally meet with interested groups and assist them in understanding
and joining the process.
I believe that Jonathan has clearly demonstrated his commitment and, more
importantly, his ability to serve all members of ICANN well as a Board
member, and feel that by virtue of this, as well as his thorough
familiarity with relevant issues and the benefit of continuity at this
still early stage of the process, his continued service as a Director
during a second term would continue to be an asset to ICANN and all of its
participants.
