Nii Quaynor has been instrumental in transferring Internetworking
technologies to developing countries and has been the chairman of the
Developing Countries Networking Symposium of the Internet Society for
several years. He has also been active throughout the ICANN process and in
particular was the chairman of sessions of the DNSO, IFWP and the chairman
of the Santiago General Assembly meeting of the DNSO. He also served on the
pNC representing the ccTLD constituency.
Nii was a member of the Membership
Advisory Committee of the ICANN where he continuously highlighted need for
inclusion of developing country interests. Nii is noted for being present in
numerous International fora to represent the interests of Africa and
Developing Countries.
Nii received received PhD in Computer Science in 1997 from SUNY.
Nii joined Digital Equipment Corporation in 1977 where he worked
on a variety of projects including VAXClusters and VAX8000/9000 processor
series. During the 14 years at Digital he was credited with formal
characterization of large distributed systems and performance design
methodologies. Nii left Digital in 1991 as a Senior Engineering Manager and
returned to Ghana in a technology transfer experiment which transformed him
into a high-technology entrepreneur.
After working as a UNDP consultant to the
Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, Nii established Network Computer
Systems to provide technology solutions. NCS provides a range of services
from equipment support to software for export and to building networks. NCS
distinguished itself in building large private corporate networks. This
expertise enabled NCS to also establish the first public networks for SWIFT,
EDI and Internet in West Africa.
Nii further took upon himself to assist
several African countries strengthen their Internetworks. Notable among them
were Togo, Gambia, Nigeria, Liberia, Swaziland and Ethiopia. His concern
that the associated human networks ought to be maintained, led to a drive to
mobilize Africans to build the relevant supporting Institutions of the
Internet in the Region. Nii became the principal coordinator for the
establishment of African Internet Institutions and succeded in getting
AfriNIC, AFNOG, AFTLD and AIG formed.
Nii taught for the International Center
for Theoretical Physics in Italy, China, Colombia, Sri Lanka and Mexico. He
also established the Computer Science Department at the University of
Cape-Coast in Ghana. Nii is currently, the Executive Chairman of NCS,
President of the Internet Society of Ghana, member of the Council of the
University of Ghana, member of the Ghana Frequency Registration and Control
Board, and a member of the Ghana News Agency Board. Nii is the ccTLD admin
for .GH and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Afrinic.
10. A statement indicating your ideas, intentions and/or the reason why
you consider you should be elected to serve in the ICANN Board
(no more than 500 words):
a. Having been an ISP, operated a Business, served on the Council of a
University, served as a regulator on the Frequency Board, been the chairman
of AfriNIC and active in the ICANN process, I bring sensitivity of the
concerns of the diverse constituencies to ICANN.
b. I will work to build consensus among the different interests to ensure
ICANN meets the needs of its membership. I support steady progress in the
development of ICANN.
c. I will continue to remain neutral and objective in building bridges to
all the membership groups of ICANN.
d. I will work to enlarge the membership of ICANN to include developing
countries whilst ensuring that the interests of emerging Internet
communities are safeguarded in the meantime.
e. I encourage strict adherence to the ICANN bylaws.
f. I support building a strong At-large membership of ICANN.
g. The stability of the Internet and harmony in the Internet community is
the success factor.
h. I will work towards geographic, cultural and financial diversity on the
Internet.
