Right, I think that if the registrant requests the name be cancelled that
the Registrar should be required to actually issue a delete request within a
certain period of time. And if the Registrant does not explicitly request a
renewal the domain should be deleted by the end of the 45-day grace period.
I think it's with policy like this that we can get pretty much what you're
looking for. I just don't think we should address the issue directly because
it starts to involve specific business models. I don't know, maybe I'm the
one picking nits now.

As far as auto-renew, we have to consider that it could go away. So the
resultant policy about a name being deleted by the end of the 45-day grace
should be formulated to take that into account.

With registry auto-renew then, a domain name would never expire. What I
thought we were trying to define was when a registrar should be required to
issue a delete command. By definition, isn't that within the time in which
the domain is maintained by the registry?
