The whole purpose of leaving this space unrestricted is not to
affect those companies and individuals who are already using the .org.
However, this should not be interpreted as a name space that its completely unrestricted.
MM ====> But it IS completely unpoliced and therefore, for all practical
purposes, unrestricted. I thought that was a point we had come to solid
agreement on. Target marketing, yes. Identity building, yes.
Restrictions, no.
If people ignore the marketing and the meaning of the ORG name and
choose to register in the space, it is perhaps unfortunate but not
particularly harmful and certainly not worth creating additional costs and
trouble over. It does not strike me as something that will happen often.
I would like to hear more about the feasibility of using registry-
registrar contracts to influence the way the names are marketed,
and about methods of policing those contracts. Perhaps, instead
of saying anything about this we can simply ask for public comment
on it.
In order to impose controls on the way it is marketed by registrars,
we need the agreement of registrars. I suspect that they will not like
the idea. Perhaps Ken can comment.
