One does not refute concerns about a very clear and
direct conflict of interest by stating that the person 
affected with it is a really good guy who somehow
won't be affected by the conflict. 

That shows a rather alarming lack of understanding of
the purpose and rationale of conflict of interest policies.
The whole point of COI is that it is impossible for
even very good and reasonable people to separate
their personal interests from their professional decisions
in certain situations. 

To maintain the integrity of an institution, one must
avoid even the appearance of such conflicts.
