Explicit renew only does something if
the domain hasn't been autorenewed.

That would mean that in a case of a domain that
was autorenewed and the customer then paid the registrar
(after the autorenew date)
the registry would not show the updated expiration
date (that the registrar would) because the registrar
couldn't renew the name (it had been autorenewed and
there is no way to do explicit renew at that time).
So the registry whois and registrar whois would
show different dates until 45 days had passed.
