- Thread-Topic: Comments sought on WIPO recommendations regarding names and acronyms of international intergovernmental organizations
This was discussed by the USPTO at the registrar meeting in Rio. This is a troubling development, and one that the USG and the IPC do not support. It would create unprecedented rights and uncertainty for our customers.
Registrars should oppose this new proposal.

Subject: [registrars] Comments sought on WIPO recommendations regarding
names and acronyms of international intergovernmental organizations
Hello All,
From: http://www.icann.org/correspondence/gurry-letter-to-cerf-lynn-21feb03.htm
and
http://www.icann.org/minutes/prelim-report-12mar03.htm
The Board has given the GNSO until 12 May 2003 to provide comments on the matters raised in the WIPO letter.
WIPO proposes that Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) be modified to allow international intergovernmental organizationss to file complaints in respect of the abusive registration of their protected names and acronyms.
This will be discussed at the next meeting of the GNSO on 17 April 2003.
The GNSO Council representatives (Bruce Tonkin, Thomas Keller, and Ken Stubbs) would appreciate any comments before then.
Regards,
Bruce
