Excerpt from "How to get a country name into ISO 3166-1" http://www.din.de/gremien/nas/nabd/iso3166ma/get_name.html:
III. A request for the inclusion of a country name (or the name of a dependent area) in ISO 3166-1 must originate from the national government of the country or from the national standards body of that country. The ISO 3166/MA rejects any request which is not accompanied by a written statement from the national goverment explicitly agreeing to and supporting the request. The secretariat of the ISO 3166/MA moved from DIN in Berlin, DE, to the ISO Central Secretariat in Geneva, CH, at the beginning of December 2001.
The new website is at: http://www.iso.org/iso/en/prods-services/iso3166ma/index.html
The task of the ISO 3166/MA is to maintain and update ISO 3166, the International Country Code Standard. The ISO 3166/MA consists of a small number of experts delegated by organizations who closely cooperate with ISO. The ISO 3166/MA is the prime source for reliable information on ISO 3166.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies from more than 140 countries, one from each country.
