ICANN's Bylaws stipulate that once a year the DNSO elects its member of the ICANN Board and set forth some additional conditions related to eligibility and geographic diversity. The DNSO shall elect its ICANN Board Director prior to 1 October, and shall notify it to the Secretary of the Corporation within fifteen days after that selection.
During its 1 August 2002 teleconference the NC confirmed that the DNSO Secretariat is in charge of elections to the ICANN Board and will announce results. The DNSO Secretariat keeps votes secret untill the end of election period, and no later that 1st October, and then make all records public.
The Names Council has resolved that the next ICANN Board director election will take place in August and September 2002.
The Names Council has resolved to use the same procedures for nomination, acceptance of nomination and endorsement as the ones used for the the election of the Chair to the GA.
On 9 August 2002 the Secretariat published the election procedures and timeline adapted to 2002 conditions.

On 30 August 2002 the list of 3 nominees who accepted their nomination for the ICANN Board position was published, and call for endorsement sent http://www.dnso.org/clubpublic/ga/Arc11/msg00025.html.
On 20 September 2002 the list of 3 candidates as well as the URLs of 41 supporters were transmitted to the Names Council for consideration.

On 20 September 2002 the Names Council's vote started.
On 24 September 2002 at 16:00 UTC, the results of the first ballot were calculated, and sent out to the Names Council members.

On 26 September 2002 during the NC teleconference, (twenty) NC members present ratified the vote result. Alejandro Pisanty was elected for 3 year term at the ICANN Board.
No later than 1 October 2002 the Secretariat will publish the full record of votes (who voted for whom) and the archives of council@dnso.org will be re-open.
