hmm....after doing some research on
http://trademarks.uspto.gov/access/search-mark.html:
the USPTO shows 2 marks for "new york yankees":
1550798 filed 08/20/1976, class 041 (entertainment), date of first use 1921.
1073346 filed 08/17/1988, class 021 (Beverage containers), with cancelled
classes for 028 (toys), 009 (thermometers), 011 (flashlights), 024 (fabrics).
Does the "cancelled" mean that it's legal to use the name "New York
Yankees" on toys without infringing on the mark, and without paying licenses?
Inquiring, but clueless minds want to know.....
