Re: [wg-b] Common Ground
Phil,
one question about the idea that new gTLDs will function as "separators"
and "classifiers" in the domain name space:
Why doesn't this business model exist already?
I.e. why isn't there a thriving business selling subdomains of "cars.com"
to Ford, Nissan and so forth; why isn't there a thriving business selling
subdomains of "sports.com" to WWF and friends?
Three possible, possibly overlapping answers:
- The idea has no merit
- The idea requires that the "grouping" labels be segregated from the
"naming" labels in some way that's easy for the consumer to understand
(such as being at the top level, or under ".cat" for "category", or....)
- The idea requires that such registries be fair, open and monitored
I'm not sure which one is right....
