[wg-c-1] The Business Model Issue
I think it's a rather difficult position that we are in, discussing
the business model (profit vs. non-profit) of the registry in
that NSI currently runs a registry.
Were ICANN to mandate that the registry must be non-profit,
NSI would never agree. ICANN is not in a position of force
this of NSI, and were they to press the issue, I suspect that
NSI's shareholders would be somewhat angry and suit-prone.
You want to try to regulate the pricing, that's a different
issue, and is already going on with the $9 price point
as set by Commerce. That might merit discussion.
But unless anyone can show how NSI could be forced into
changing their registry, a for-profit and public corporation,
into a non-profit, the issue is rather moot. New registries
certainly could not be mandated to be non-profit while
allowing NSI to remain for-profit.
