[description of AFNIC]
I might add that Milton and others make the implicit assumption that
maximizing the number of registrations in a TLD is an intrinsic good.
That is not necessarily true. A model where the bulk of
registrations were several layers down in the tree is completely
justifiable.
Furthermore, while it seems that short memorable names are popular,
there is a disturbing circularity there -- if long names were the
only ones available, then long names would be popular. That is,
there is a great deal of faddism here, and catering to a fad is not
necessarily the best thing to do, unless you just want to make a lot
of money quick.
