I might add that Milton and others make the implicit assumption that
maximizing the number of registrations in a TLD is an intrinsic good. 
That is not necessarily true.  A model where the bulk of 
registrations were several layers down in the tree is completely 
justifiable. 

Furthermore, while it seems that short memorable names are popular, 
there is a disturbing circularity there -- if long names were the 
only ones available, then long names would be popular.  That is, 
there is a great deal of faddism here, and catering to a fad is not 
necessarily the best thing to do, unless you just want to make a lot 
of money quick.
