RE: [wg-c] New gTLDs via US Government legislation???
For what it is worth, I don't see the U.S. Congress passing such a law this
session. When such a topic came up before in discussions in hearings,
members weren't suggesting that a law was needed; they did ask whether it
would be useful to have an .xxx gTLD. Civil libertarians and First Amendment
folks and some others don't think it will solve the concern that it was
intended to address. I don't believe it has "legs", but that doesn't mean
that you won't see more news media suggesting that someone, or other, is
interested in such an idea.

your hypothesis being that, if icann were federally controlled, it could
keep us congresscritters from wanting to do stupid things?
