Re: [wg-c] Short Position Paper
kent,
a section i would like to see added to this discussion should deal with
the costs associated with becoming a registrar of any new gTLD registry.
for instance if 5 new registries were added to the mix, and they all had
simular policies as NSI, it would cost a registrar $50,000 to use the
propritary interface to each of the 5 new registries. the new registries
would not have a simular interface, at least not one like NSI's RRP. New
registrars would also have to pony up $500,000 for a preformance bond and
whatever they wated to prime their accounts with say 20,000 each so that
would be another $100,000.
There are several other operational headaches that would have to be delt
with like how transfers work, and what the formats of referal whois
databases look like.
Add all the above to the mix and you get a very non-operational domain
allocation scheem.
IMHO, the above issues need to be delt with allong side any discussion to
add new gTLDs to the root. Ignoring the operational issues will only add
to the disaster.
