FF&d=PALL&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1='6,154,738'.WKU.&OS=PN
/6,154,738&RS=PN/6,154,738
i.e. it looks like they want the tlds "upc," "ean," "gpc," and "ibn". And
i agree with Berryhills speculation on this.

This, gang, is the first of what I predict will be many...
You thought the trademark people were ornery?
Feh. They can only shut down a domain name. The patent folks can cut off
the
juice for an entire chartered TLD.
United States Patent 6,154,738
November 28, 2000
Methods and apparatus for disseminating product information via the internet
using universal product codes
"The Internet domain name system that is currently in widespread use is
described in RFCs 1034 and 1035. RFC 1034 provides an introduction to the
Domain
Name System (DNS), and omits many details which can be found in its
companion
RFC 1035 which is entitled "Domain Names--Implementation and Specification."
Recently, The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a
non-profit corporation, was formed to take over responsibility for the IP
address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system
management, and root server system management functions currently performed
under U.S. Government contract by LANA and other entities. Accordingly, at
this
writing, ICANN, or a new authority authorized by ICANN, would be the
appropriate
authority to reserve DNS namespace for the translation of universal product
codes (or company codes) to ip addresses as proposed here. "
