That's easy, make it a "work group" condition. The purpose of a wg is to
gather input for an output. If people show up and don't offer any kind of
input,
what is their purpose in being there? as a head count? What sort of work is
supposed to go on here? non-work? How do we measure work? input and
outpout. It happens every day in the real world. people have a job, they
got to work at a certain time; their employers pay them for their input
because
they expect to make a profit on the output. What's the problem here?
[Joanna] Without wishing to words into another person's mouth, on behalf of
the seriously interested but silent members of this WG, of which I have no
doubt there are many, I would say this.
I do not agree with any suggestion that only the "talkers" have any value in
this WG and would caution against this approach. God forbid people are
mandated to make posts or cast votes in the polls simply to justify their
existence here. We need listeners too you know and the idea is to encourage
people to participate, not to discourage it.
It's common to any democracy that people will vote with their feet, but that
does not void the votes of the people who participated. People vote with
their feet when they're confronted with smoke and mirrors that ask for their
support of something that appears to be righteous but is rotten to the core.
(I'm not saying that is what is happening here, but it should not be
discounted as a possible reason for some abstainers).
Suggestion: We have the talent here to undertake at least some of the
language translations that have been identified as necessary to increase
participation and I would trust members including Sotiris, Jefsey and Pilar
to assist Joop and Greg in preparing an alternative poll in their native
language. Surely, this could be done and posted in less an hour?
