I'm more inclined to look at it as a tabula rasa (blank slate). Context
*may* determine *its* association, but this does not imply context as a
necessary condition.
For instance, the term "songbird" has a specific meaning in the English
language. Our fellow WGer Kent Crispin has staked out the relations and
associations of "songbird" within the scope of the COM universe. He
was the first to get there, so he chooses what it will be. Now is
songbird.com a noun or an adjective? you tell me, please.
