[ga] Re: Open Letter to Mr Jeff Neuman from The Internet Challenge

Dear Jeff, Vint and Hal

I'd just like to remind you what Roland laPlante said with reference to the
.info Landrush 2:

http://www.newsfactor.com/perl/story/15172.html

"The folks who were mad should be satisfied that they have an equal chance"

and he added that the process would be fair to all applicants...

HOW?

HOW is Afilias going to make sure that "exclusive" lists are not submitted
for certain registrars who then go ahead and put the high value domains up
for sale (as appears to be the case with law.biz at GreatDomains.com :
Signature Domains only obtained 10 names in their .biz 2B mini-list, and
every single one was registered for Joshua Blacker who has admitted he is a
partner of Signature Domains. Within days, we start to see these names up
for sale, in breach of .biz restrictions)?

HOW is Afilias going to prevent a re-run of the .biz 2B release which saw
eight registrars submitting "exclusive" mini-lists (including Hal Lubsen's
DomainPro!!!). If the CEO of Afilias is involved with a company which
submits a mini-list then what reassurance does the ordinary person have that
they have a fair chance. Short lists, constructed for favoured clients, and
not accessible online to the public, result in an uneven process. It's the
exploitation of ICANN-granted privilege, at the expense of the general
public who are excluded from these "special" opportunities.

HOW is Afilias going to guarantee that the process is fair to all applicants
and people have "an equal chance" when they have announced that registrars
can adopt their own policies and have a free hand over how they submit their
lists?

What has Afilias got to say about this visible contradiction?

And will ICANN intervene to make sure the Registry/Registrar Agreements are
amended to introduce safeguards?

Or don't ordinary consumers and fair play matter?

Richard Henderson
