Re: [ga] .aero

Just curious why domainbank.aero ("the largest .aero registrar") is
charging $98 per year. The seems double per the application. Does the
registry operator still get $16? ICANN $2? Does ICANN's per unit
transaction fee proposal apply to .aero since it is already getting $2
here? Wonder how they came up with this $2 anyway...everything is supposed
to be cost-plus, right? (the logic behind .com originally being set at $6
in a pure monopoly environment...some magical, top secret formula I have
yet to see even after repeated request...if anyone can point me to it, I
would be appreciative). What's the formula to substantiate the $2 to
ICANN? Is there a "reserve" built into this $2? Why are qualified end-
users having to pay $98 when it was proposed to be $50? And this only
matters because certainly end-user price had to be a material consideration
in arriving to consensus of the "6 - 10" mandate. Lastly, what kind of
logic proposes for more $ to the retailer than the wholesaler ($30 vs. $16)
by almost 2 - 1 where issues of infrastructure stability and investment
certainly reside more at registry level rather than the registrar? And,
don't forget, ICANN clearly placed the marketing burdon upon the registry
applicant. I just don't see the logic for the near 2 - 1 ratio....it's
going the wrong way if anything. So, at domainbank's $98 retail, is this
really a near 5 - 1 ratio? Have market conditions changed since Nov. 2000
to have caused this? Do not these same market conditions affect the
Verisign registry too? How pleased could the air transportation industry
members be that they get to pay $98 after Nancy Victory and ICANN testify
to Congress that competition has resulted in the average retail price of a
domain being $10?

"The revenue model will be based on the fees perceived for the names
registration in the ".air" domain and on registrars charges, in return of
the delivered services by SITA INC.
An end-user fee of $50 per name and per year will be perceived to register
a new name in the professional ".air" domain. This fee will be distributed
to the different contributors in the following manner:"

ICANN $2

Registry operator (SITA INC) $16

Registrar operator $30

Sponsoring Organization $2
