[registrars] Verisign Patent - implications

Hi,

I just read this on slashdot and icannwatch - abt a verisign patent
which basically gives them rights on displaying results of multiple TLDs
by using basically a glorified nslookup.

http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL
&p=1&u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=6,560,634.WKU.&OS=PN/6,560,
634&RS=PN/6,560,634

This basically means any registrar who attempts to check if an "IN NS"
record exists for a ccTLD or gTLD at the corresponding registry and uses
that to display whether a domain exists in the zone or not (and
therefore is probably available or not) is violating this patent.

Their patent makes out their MULTI-THREADED DNS QUERY ENGINE as if it
were some hi-fi invented technology. Any programmer can write a
multi-threaded DNS query engine in a matter of a day. We use internal
scripts for our support team to verify whether a domain is in the
registry or not, which simply does recursive queries from the ROOT
downwards to identify if a domain name is in the zones or not - for any
type of a domain. We have been doing this since way before we were
registrars.

On another note maybe I oughta apply for a patent on the following -

* database connection pooling
* socket connection pooling
* using a multi-threaded PING to discover whether a server is up or not

All I need is a day off from work to prepare a descriptive doc on my
ingenuity at converting existing public domain protocols into my
inventions
