What lock-in? Purchase .to, .cc, or .us if you don't like .com - or open
new TLDs for competition. Is each and every one going to be too
expensive for you? Then start your own. But stop whining about
prices that are too high - there are alternatives to .com.
As far as existing customers, they got in when the price was $50
per year, and now it's $35 direct, and even cheaper with a
registrar (I saw a CORE registrar selling for $20 per year).
Obviously the market would bear costs of $50 per year (vs. a
.us domain which was cheaper).
Economics takes your argument and has it for lunch.
