IBM donated machines for University Network people to learn on their solutions
back in 1979 to build Euronet, the strategy saw not hidden at that time.
Everyone though it was good investment on very poor technology. Then came
the PC failure (PC took off when released from IBM)

AT&T has similar moves. However from my own international standard and policy
meeings the fcame far more late. But MCI was an early bird with a lt of good
people even before Bob Harcharick set up his team.
