They'd be truly short-sighted if they didn't.  If they were to prove so 
short-sighted... maybe they shouldn't be in such a responsibility-laden 
position.

It's a pretty convenient one though, don't you think.  Pretty hard to 
re-educate everybody very quickly...  I'll bet it'll be here for some 
time to come.

Again, this may be a future concern, but it's not all that valid or 
relevant at this point.

Control of the root domain is a technical matter and should not spill 
over into policy.  ICANN has done (practically) nothing in the technical 
realm.

Maybe in *some* markets, not all.  Certainly not in the world market at 
this point.  Too much has already gone into the existing system to 
easily change it overnight.  Perhaps, 20 years from now this would be a 
valid concern... I don't think it is now (imho).
