Re: [wg-review] New.net

Sotiris and group,
This is just the beginning. ICANN needs only look in the mirror to see the
reason for this. That and the fact that the internet is not their 'on a
silver platter' toy. We are all aware of the operating alternate roots.
They are here to stay, whether ICANN cares to acknowledge them or not. And
there are going to be more as developing areas create regional or non latin
character based systems of their own. The clear path for ICANN (if it
wishes to be realistic) is to incorporate them into the 'prime' root and
work with them rather than pretend they are not there. It is for ICANN
and/or the USG (and it's agencies) to decide whether or not we develope the
net in an organized and logical cooperative manner, or if we have an
anarchic (sp) rollout of TLD's that proliferate conflicts such as could
happen if the dot biz double TLD situation isn't prevented. Then it will be
for a future powerful entity to pull the various groups together and sort
out the confusion into an organized and accesible base for internetizens
some years down the line. We have the tools for this right now, to ignore
it is to delay the true global evolution of an interlocking cooperative
truly 'world wide web'. Only time will tell.

For myself, I'm going to get another letter off to my senior Senator, Sen
Conrad Burns (R) MT. It would be nice to have the smoother alternative in
growing the global net, even if it means that USG has to 'invent' some other
group to transition the control of the main root of the present internet out
of USG control instead of the ICANN.
