Don't assume that the actual "expiration" date in the registry for a
domain name is the same as what the registrar shows in their whois.
Especially with Verisign's Registrar.

The registry has the proper expiration date, you can guarantee that,
but we have no way of accessing that data.

I know this was just meant to be an amusing anecdote, but it was worth
noting. Some registrars, including Verisign Registrar, have been
known to accept payment for additional years for domain names that
have not yet come up to their anniversary renewal, and NOT adding
those years to the registration at the registrar. Then the user may
transfer the domain name before that anniversary, and then find out
Verisign never added those years to the domain name and that they have
no way of getting them back now. Verisign's customer support tells
them that they can't add the years now, since the domain is not
registered with them any longer.

It should also be noted that when you do a transfer, any time that
remains on the domain registration at the registry transfer with the
domain, at least to the registrar. Verisign's registrar is the ONLY
registrar who does not honor that time for their customers who
transfer domains into Verisign. Even though Verisign will not be
"billed" by the registry for that time/years, Verisign will charge the
customer for it, thus screwing them out of the time they paid for at
the previous registrar. At this time Verisign is the ONLY registrar
to engage in practice.

Both of these practices are certainly unethical in my opinion, and in
fact may even give individuals effected by them a legal cause of
action against Verisign.
