Right, the lock-in problem is real, in that there are "sunk costs" in a
domain name. But the sunk costs are not infinite and there are ways,
including technological means such as re-directs, to minimize them.

In a competitive *registry* marketplace, I can see business and
technological arrangements evolving to make this a non-problem. Registries
will want to be able to attract business away from their competitors. Of
course they will devise ways to redirect traffic headed for obsolete links.
