I can elaborate on this issue to some extent.  Having been involved with
several startup companies who have unique names, they each attempted to
register under their names under .com, .net and .org.  In each and every
instance, the names were already registered.  These were not run of the mill
names they wished to register.  This required each company to add on to
their company name which makes it more difficult for their customers to find
them on the web.
