[wg-c] factoid
For other reasons I have been monitoring network traffic to Songbird
very closely, and offer the following concrete numbers concerning DNS
traffic: during the sample interval, the particular subnet involved
received packets from 5075 different hosts. Of those 5075 hosts,
traffic to 3969 of them consisted *solely* of DNS packets. Traffic
to the remaining 1106 hosts also included DNS packets, in addition to
other protocols. If we think in terms of service transactions, then,
about 80% of them are DNS queries. Note that DNS queries are very
small, relatively speaking, so the total bandwith consumed is very
much smaller than 80%. But the number of individual requests is
significant in its own right.
This is a small sample, but consistent with experience at much
larger sites.
