as well as other non-security-related fare... such as "Enhancing the 
Internet's Administrative Look-up Service" presented by VeriSign Applied 
Research.  

Their abstract points to "efforts to shift this look-up service away from 
whois to other, more capable protocols..."  They describe "a project to 
replace whois with LDAP, and a proposed XML-based directory protocol that 
mirrors much of the effort going into EPP (Extensible Provisioning Protocol)."
